Best Bakery Judgement

Date:
28 June 2003

Press Statement

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

On The Perversion Of Justice In Gujarat

It is shocking that in the case of the Best Bakery mass killing in Vadodara, all the accused have been acquitted. The judge in the case has stated that the case fell through as no evidence was provided.

The killing of fourteen people in the Best Bakery was one of the worst incidents in the communal pogroms in Gujarat last year. The conduct of the case by the prosecution and the State is a graphic illustration of how justice is denied to the victims of all the vicious crimes committed in that period. Worse, it shows the Modi government's connivance with those who perpetrated the crisis. The trial of the accused was marked by intimidation of witnesses, blatant negligence by the police and shoddy prosecution by the State authorities.

The Best Bakery crime is a test case whether the law can be enforced and justice rendered. The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) demands that appropriate legal steps be taken to get the case heard in appeal.
